Vollstrecker by voirdire99 Vollstrecker by voirdire99
Very early color stage on this guy. He started off as an eeeevil Batman type, but as I drew him he just kind of evolved and warped in really fun ways. The goofy face was an accident in drawing, but I liked it so I started thinking more about who he could be instead of what I intended. That led to him getting a little paunch for a belly, like there might be some greed inherent to his character. Then his costume shifted -- bigger gauntlets, bigger boots, bigger gun -- and I decided to make him the internal strong-arm for the bad guys, the enforcer. I'd always planned on making him German so I googled the translation and ... Vollstrecker.

A friend looked at him and said he looks like Mok from 'Rock 'n Rule.' Big difference in characters but now I hear that voice whenever I look at Vollstrecker. I'm okay with that.

*** NEUFASSUNG DER VOLLSTRECKER!!! ***

I'm sure that's incorrect in German, but in English I'm saying that I updated the Vollstrecker. People really respond to this guy, pot belly and all.

I like this. I like this a lot. He's got a Grey Ghost vibe about him that I really dig.

He's actually a pretty nasty guy. He can come across as a sort of "bumbling backwater sheriff" in the super villain crowd he works for so he overcompensates with a mean streak like you've never seen. He spends most of his time using his amazing detective skills to get dirt on the villains then blackmailing and extorting them into doing jobs they would otherwise refuse. He's greatly feared but never actually respected and it makes him crazy, unstable and unpredictable. His journey is a very dark, dirty allegory about secrets and desire and the downward spiral it can send a person into.

But visually, yeah, definite Gray Ghost influence there!

Yeah, this guy just looks cooler than Grey Ghost.
And he has a really neat story too. He's one of those "all bases covered" villains. Kind of the anti-Batman.

Anti-Batman was exactly what I had in mind. Once you decide to "evil" Batman you get all kinds of nasty, gritty possibilities. I'm still working on evil-ing a Superman analogue but I don't want him to become the standard dumb jock that most folks do. The closest I've seen to a decent one was Morrison's take on Ultra-Man for the Crime Syndicate, but I'd want to push that WAY further.

Oooh, eviling Superman is tough.
I guess going the Red Son route and making a Superman from an enemy country, like a Nazi Superman, is the easiest route. Just a Superman type character that landed in the wrong country when Krypton blew up. Make him a character that was force-fed propaganda as a youth and there's where you can add the crazy element.
I'm sure you'll come up with something awesome, though. Can't wait to see it!
